Ok so here is the official word on the team race.
I will tell you that this is troubling and there is no easy answer, the series has not generated the money it needed to, to do what I wanted to do. We had a lot of interest from sponsors but only a couple have stepped up to the plate so there simply is no more money to go round. Giving away more money is simply not an option, the series will already make a loss this year due to the significant investment in other services we are providing to racers, like GPS timing and a 2 million dollar liability insurance policy required by the park for us to race there, the list goes on. We are working for the future and not a fast buck
As I have always promised I will do my best to get and keep everyone racing and that is what has driven me to make the following solution to the team racing problem. Maybe in 2013 we can get more money and go back to what we had last year but this year the following format will be as it is about to be stated.
1, Team and Iron Man drivers will race for the same prizes and points. There will be no separation for team and iron man.
2, Team drivers will be watched very closely to ensure fair play, any breach of the rules from team drivers pertaining to the team driver format will result in immediate disqualification for that race and no refund will be issued.
3, Two rule breach infractions in the same season will lead to a team being excluded from the following race.
4, Three rule breaches for the team format will lead to teams being disqualified from the entire series for the rest of that year.
5, In a team with two vehicles the higher ranked vehicle will decide the class for the team.
6, The vehicle that is waiting in the pits cannot have more than one gallon of fuel in it, it cannot be fueled up until the first vehicle had entered and stopped in the pit area for that team to make the handover.
7, Crews for the waiting vehicles are not allowed to enter that vehicle until it has been fueled up. They cannot sit in the vehicle strapped in and waiting for the first vehicle to return. They must wait outside of the vehicle atleast 5 feet from it on the passengers side until the first vehicle had entered the pit area and come to a complete stop.
e.g. An XP and an S run in the same team, that team will be running in the Outlaw class as the XP is the highest ranked vehicle and the XP is inelligible for the class 2 of the 800s but the 800s is eligible for the Outlaw Class of the XP.
There will be no debate and no jury, it is your responsibility to ensure you know the rules and follow them. It has to be this way to ensure fair play for all and a fun series. Last year UTVRR spawned a great bunch of racers and a family atmosphere, lets keep it up for this coming season 2012.
Any vehicle waiting in the pits to go out as part of a team race, whether it has been out already or not is not allowed to have more than one gallon of fuel in it. Vehicles are not allowed to sit in the pits waiting on their partner with more than one gallon of gas in the tank.
e.g. Here is an example of how this ruling will play out.
Team Ambush has two vehicles, they have an XP and an 800s, they are entered into the Outlaw class as they have an XP in their team.
The XP starts the race and the 800s goes back to the pits. It has no more that 1 gallon of fuel in it's tank. The driver and navigator are waiting for the first vehicle to come in to the pit and make a change out. They see their team mate coming and have to wait outside the vehicle. The first vehicle comes into the pit and comes to a complete stop. Once the first vehicle has come to a complete stop they start to put fuel in their ride, once the vehicle is fueled up they run around the vehicle strap in and take off.
For the purposes of this rule it is considered that in the case of any vehicle using a digital fuel gauge that a flashing empty sign or flashing first block on the fuel gauge is enough to be considered within regulation regarding the "one gallon or empty rule."
The ruling has been designed this way to combat two things.
1, The excessive advantage a team had in 2011 against an iron man driver when it came to pitting for fuel.
2, To combat the difference in fatigue levels between that of a team driver and that of an iron man driver.
Arguably the team will be longer in the pits than an iron man driver but the iron man driver will be far more fatigued as they have not had the advantage of being able to rest in the pits for 30 or 40 minutes per stop during the race while their team mate runs the course.
I have put a considerable amount of time into this rule and for 2012 this is the best we can come up with. I have consulted with others on this subject and when all is said and done this is the best we can make of the current situation.
If you are running as a team with your friends please abide by these rules, there can be no middle ground. Infraction of this ruling by any team will be dealt wish harshly to keep the series fair for all.
Thanks for your patience,
Jason,
